Chlorine Demand in Triple-Digit Heat: Why Summer Eats Your Sanitizer

Last Friday in Las Vegas we opened the equipment pad on a pool that had tested 4 ppm free chlorine on Monday. Four days later it was down to 1. The feeder was full, the pump was running, and nobody had thrown a party. The pool was simply doing what Valley pools do in a triple-digit stretch: burning sanitizer faster than the dosing schedule assumed. Here is where all that chlorine goes, and how to stay ahead of it.

Where four days of chlorine actually went

Three things consume chlorine, and summer turns all three up at once.

The first is sunlight. Ultraviolet light breaks down free chlorine directly, and between June and September the sun sits high over Southern Nevada for fourteen-plus hours a day. UV does not care how carefully you dosed. It works on whatever is in the water, every daylight hour.

The second is heat itself. Chemical reactions speed up as water warms, and an unshaded Vegas pool routinely holds 88 to 94 degrees by late July. Every reaction chlorine participates in — oxidizing sweat and sunscreen, attacking algae spores, combining with dust — runs faster in that water than it did in May. Faster reactions mean faster consumption.

The third is load. Summer is when the pool gets used: more swimmers, more sunscreen, more organic material for chlorine to burn through. Add the fine dust that settles on every backyard surface in the Valley and the water is asking more of its sanitizer at exactly the moment the sun is destroying it fastest.

In the pools we service across the Las Vegas Valley, we typically see chlorine demand in July and August run close to double what the same pool needs in March. Same pool, same equipment, twice the appetite.

The math of summer chlorine loss

Unstabilized chlorine in direct summer sun can lose half its strength in well under an hour. That is why cyanuric acid, usually just called stabilizer or conditioner, matters so much here. At around 30 to 50 ppm, it acts as sunscreen for your sanitizer, extending its working life from minutes to hours.

But stabilizer is a trade, not a free lunch. As cyanuric acid climbs past that range, chlorine becomes progressively slower at killing what it touches, so the residual you carry has to rise to compensate. And Vegas pools drift upward almost automatically: evaporation takes pure water and leaves everything else behind, so every top-off concentrates what is already dissolved. A pool that started the season at 40 ppm of stabilizer can quietly climb well past it by fall without anyone adding a thing.

Chemical imbalances in the pool water

So summer chlorine loss is really a balancing act between two failure modes. Too little stabilizer and the sun strips your chlorine by mid-afternoon. Too much and your test strip shows a comfortable number that is not protecting the water the way it appears to. The CDC’s healthy swimming guidance is built around free chlorine actually being available to work — not just present on a test.

A dosing rhythm that keeps up

The pools that sail through August without a green scare are almost never the ones getting heroic shock treatments. They are the ones on a steady rhythm. Here is the one we recommend:

  1. Test twice a week, same time of day. Late afternoon readings show your daily low point. One reading a week in summer leaves too much room for a quiet slide toward zero.
  2. Dose in the evening. Chlorine added after sundown gets a full night to circulate and oxidize before UV takes its share.
  3. Check stabilizer monthly through summer. Evaporation and hard fill water push levels around faster here than in most places. Know your number before adjusting chlorine targets.
  4. Run the pump through the heat of the day. Circulation moves treated water into corners and steps where algae starts first. Stagnant warm water is an invitation.
  5. Skim and brush weekly. Every leaf and dust film you remove physically is chlorine your pool does not have to spend chemically. This is half of what a good routine cleaning visit accomplishes.
  6. Re-test the day after any large dose. How fast the number falls tells you whether you are fighting weather or something growing.

If keeping that rhythm through a Vegas summer sounds like a part-time job, that is because it roughly is one. A weekly maintenance plan exists to carry it for you, and mid-summer is when it earns its keep. Feeders, floaters, and salt cells at 110 degrees

How you deliver chlorine matters more in summer than any other season. Trichlor tablets in a feeder or floater are convenient, but every tablet adds stabilizer along with sanitizer — which is precisely the number already creeping up on its own here. A pool running tablets all summer often ends the season with stabilizer far above the useful range.

Liquid chlorine adds no stabilizer, which is why many Valley pros lean on it through the hottest months, at the cost of more frequent dosing. Salt systems generate chlorine without stabilizer too, but our hard water scales the cell plates quickly, and a scaled cell can silently produce a fraction of its rated output right when demand peaks. If your salt pool cannot hold a residual in August, the cell is the first thing we inspect. A clogged filter compounds all of it by cutting circulation, so summer is a bad season to put off filter cleaning or replacement.

⚠️ A hard safety line: never mix chlorine products. Trichlor tablets and cal-hypo shock can react violently — even trace amounts of one in a scoop or bucket used for the other. Never add liquid chlorine and muriatic acid at the same time or in the same spot, and store chemicals out of the sun and out of a hot garage, sealed and separated. Heat makes stored oxidizers less stable, not more forgiving. When in doubt about a reaction or a fume, step away and call a professional.

When high demand is a symptom, not the weather

Some pools burn chlorine fast because it is July. Others burn it fast because something is wrong, and the weather is covering for it. The tell is persistence: if the water will not hold a residual overnight, when UV is out of the picture, sunlight is not your problem. Early-stage algae consumes sanitizer before it is ever visible on a wall. So do phosphates washed in from irrigation and landscaping, which feed whatever is trying to grow. The distinction matters because the fixes are different. Weather-driven demand is managed with rhythm and stabilizer. Symptom-driven demand needs the cause found — a water panel, a phosphate test, a look at circulation dead spots — or you will pour chlorine at it all season and stay behind.

How often should I test my pool in a Las Vegas summer?

Twice a week from June through September, and always at the same time of day so your readings are comparable. Late afternoon shows the day’s low point for free chlorine. A pool that tests fine at 8 a.m. can be underprotected by 5 p.m., which is exactly when most people swim.

Is it normal for chlorine to disappear in a day or two?

In a heat wave, dropping from 4 ppm to 1 ppm over three or four days is common demand, not a malfunction. What is not normal is losing everything overnight while the water stays cloudy or dull. That pattern usually points to early algae or a heavy organic load, and it deserves a closer look.

Does stabilizer stop summer chlorine loss?

It slows it dramatically but never stops it. Cyanuric acid at roughly 30 to 50 ppm shields chlorine from UV so it survives hours instead of minutes. Push stabilizer much past that range, though, and the chlorine you have works more slowly, so you need higher residuals to get the same sanitizing power.

Should I add chlorine in the morning or the evening?
